Charter Schools

WHY IS THIS A PRIORITY: Additional federal funding for education is available for states with charter schools.

The League of Women Voters of Mississippi supports Charter Schools if the following criteria are met:

  • The State Board of Education is the regulatory agency responsible for regulating and governing the submission of local school board petitions for charters and the operation of charter schools.
  • Charter schools are non-sectarian, non-religious, non-profit, and non-home based.
  • Charter schools provide education for all children regardless of their race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age sexual orientation or disability.
  • Accountability reports should be required and submitted annually to parents, community, local school boards, State School Board, and the Legislature.
  • State law should clarify funding sources.

FACT: Mississippi charter school law lapsed in July 2008. TNTP funds assessment was made before this so the criteria filed by the Governor was not accepted. The Governor needs to file again so Mississippi can receive this money.
