Representative Goverment: Judicial Selection

The League supports an open government that is representative, accountable, and responsive to all citizens.

The League of Women Voters of Mississippi:

  • supports Merit Selection/Election Retention as the means of selecting justices for the Mississippi Supreme Court and judges for the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

This mode of selection involves:

  • Nomination of justices and judges by a diverse, representative, nonpartisan commission whose members serve staggered terms
  • Appointment for a specific term; these terms to be staggered
  • Retention elections to be held at the end of the term
